When we are all taught about the Word of Wisdom it is usually about abstaining from drugs, alcohol, tea, coffee, and anything else that is harmful to our bodies... but do we realize that there is more to the Word of Wisdom, or maybe we do, but like to over look the parts that are harder for us to obey....
For example...if you never partake of drugs, alcohol, tea or coffee you exempt from their addictive properties...not too hard to avoid something you have never partaken. Not to over look the peer pressure involved, and many do struggle with addictions to these substances, and i don't want to be insensitive to them, but that is not where my thoughts are today. My thoughts today are on what we are avoiding or over looking in the great Word of Wisdom.
How often do we think i have avoided drugs, alcohol, tea or coffee so i am good on the obeying the Word of Wisdom. Check on that one. Easy, Right? I think wrong. And this is a new thought to me, or at least it has finally sunk in today. I know the word of wisdom says more than just avoid drugs, alcohol, tea or coffee, but the other things seem like they aren't as life altering. If i don't go to bed early and rise early i am surly not going to die. I will not become addicted and give my agency away. Nope, so that one cannot be as important...right...wrong.
I am thinking that the Word of Wisdom is more the Words of Wisdom. It truly is a revelation from our Father in Heaven, and it should not be over looked. When the revelation was given i am sure there weren't people over indulging on desserts, visiting McDonald's 2-4 times a week, not exercising, or walking around with very unhealthy body weights. But today we struggle. I am not pointing fingers...really i think the reason this is so important is cause i needed to hear it.Sometimes it is amazing what hits us all of a sudden. Our Father in Heaven is so aware of us everyday. He knew to put the WofW in the scriptures for all of His children's good health, and He is aware of when i am humble enough to hear it and let it soak in. I wanted to study the WofW out a little more today while the Spirit was busy teaching me what i already knew but refused to admit so I got on LDS.org and discovered a talk and found some profound things that really proved the thoughts I was having.
Sister Barbara B. Smith (who was the RS General Pres in 1978) said this, "Good health practices pay important dividends in later years. Our physical health can be enhanced when we keep the Word of Wisdom, eat a well-balanced diet every day, practice good dental hygiene, control weight, get adequate sleep and rest, maintain a physical fitness program, and adhere to medical procedures which insure a healthy life." So not only do we need to say away from addictive substances but we need to eat healthy, exercises, brush our teeth, and not be so stubborn when it come to going to the dr.
The rest of her talk is about aging and preparing to age...and while i am not quite worried about my Grandma years yet, i think now is the time to prepare to be around for those Grandma years. I want to be a healthy person, someone who feels good in her skin and knows she is healthy. I think there is great power in being healthy and not in just energy alone, but in spiritual health and energy as well. I know that if I can live a healthier life, i can be a better mom to my beautiful blessing of a boy and my incredible husband. They are really what life is all about. My good health is the least of all the things i can give them...i need to take control of my life and make myself healthier for not just myself but for them too.
